Background Information
Around 700 BC, the Northern Black Polished Ware culture were the first to step foot in Bangladesh. During the Mughal Period, the Portuguese, Dutch, Brititsh, and French set up trading ports in southern Asia in search for spices. In 1858, Britain colonized Bangladesh. In the early 1900s, the people of south Asia started a movement to force Great Britain out. When India became independent and split into two countries, Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan. In 1971, the Bangladesh Liberation War took place, where Bangladesh fought for independence. March 26 is celebrated every year as Independence Day due to the fact Bangladesh declared independence from Pakistan on March 25, 1971.
Modern Information
Bangladesh has a population density of around 500 people per square mile. Bangladesh ranks among the top ten of most populous countries in the world. A problem that is relevant is poverty because nearly half the world's poor live in the region. Most of Bangladesh is rural; however, the capital, Dhaka, is urban. Many migrants are forced to live in urban slums or on the streets.
